Is it better to go to a class or practise on your own?

Most people find that when they start meditating it’s much easier in a group.  You get a lot of inspiration from people doing the same thing as you.  But after a while you build up your own discipline and then it is easy to meditate on your own.  In the Sri Chinmoy centre we do both; we have our own practice and then at least twice a week we meditate together.  It’s really helpful to meditate with a group, especially for beginners.

Sometimes people don’t live near to a meditation centre, or their work and family commitments make it difficult to attend regular classes.  In this case, you can start your practice alone by using meditative music and following some simple exercises.  In the longer term you may find that your circumstances change and opportunities become available when you really need them.  It’s never the wrong time to start with some basic exercises and see where the process leads to.
